The Early Years Foundation Stage 2017, was published on the 3rd of March 2017 to come into effect on the 3rd of April 2017.
The 2017 version includes several changes, to the 2014 edition of the Framework.
One major change requires all new staff entering Early Years MUST have an up-to-date Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification as a minimum in order to be included in staff ratios, The Government believes that this will add an additional 15,000 trained First Aiders to the sector.
We believe that this change can only be good for the children being cared for in Early Years sectors.
Other changes in the EYFS 2017 document:
New level 3 qualification requirements, replacing the GCSE only rule,
References made to the Prevent Strategy,
Training for staff on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM),
Mention is given to the 2011 Physical activity guidelines.

This is the current framework to be followed by all Early Years settings in England.
The original framework pack in 2008, came complete with 2 booklets, which have been amalgamated into the current guidance, a CD Rom, poster and Practice into Principles cards.
As the cards are still useful in terms of planning and supporting the EYFS and children’s development we have provided a link to these cards and poster, but please remember that they no longer form an active part of the EYFS framework, and some of the information does not match current guidance.

With the introduction of the 2017 Early Years Foundation Stage, information contained within these non-statutory documents may no longer meet the requirements of the 2017 EYFS, We have provided them as a guide only.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Progress Check at Age Two
The Early Years Foundation Stage Progress Check at Age Two was produced by National Children’s Bureau and supports Early Years staff to implement the statutory progress check at age 2 as required in the Early Years Foundation Stage 2012 and 2014.
The 2 year check was introduced to help early identification of developmental needs in order to provide any additional support as soon as possible.
The EYFS does not prescribe any method or format to be used. The EYFS only specifies that the check should cover the 3 prime areas:
-
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development,
-
- Physical Development,
-
- Communication and Language.
The guidance aims to stimulate ideas for practitioners to approach the 2 year check.
It is widely acknowledged the important role that parents play in their own children’s development.
This is identified within the EYFS with the inclusion of the Positive Relationships;
Children learn to be strong and
independent from a base of
loving and secure relationships with
parents and/or a key person.
Parents need to know what to expect and when roughly to expect it in their child’s development age band.
This 4Children guide takes parents through their child’s age band in the EYFS and how they can support their children through their development.

In February 2017, the Government published a new Core Guidance Document, which updates the statutory definition of Child Sexual Exploitation.
“Child sexual exploitation is a form of child sexual abuse.
It occurs where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, manipulate or deceive a child or young person under the age of 18 into sexual activity:
(a) in exchange for something the victim needs or wants, and/or
(b) for the financial advantage or increased status of the perpetrator or facilitator.
The victim may have been sexually exploited even if the sexual activity appears consensual. Child sexual exploitation does not always involve physical contact; it can also occur through the use of technology.”
