FOOD SAFETY

Food Safety

Food safety is important for anyone who comes into contact with food in their daily work role.

Did you know…

An estimated 2.4 million cases of
food-borne illness occur every year in the UK!

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), achieving a good level of food safety should help your business to:

  • Obey the law,
  • Reduce the risk of food poisoning to your customers,
  • Protect your business’s reputation.

In order to help maintain high standards of food safety it is important that you remember the 4 Cs. We will explore these throughout our qualifications, however, in introduction they are:

  • Cross-contamination,
  • Cleaning,
  • Cooking,
  • Chilling.

In order to support food businesses, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) provides guidance packs in order to support the safety of food manufactured and served to the general public. These guidance packs help businesses to evidence their food safety practices upon inspection or other reasonable request.

The other important thing that The Food Safety Agency provides is a Food Hygiene Rating Scheme that is helpful for consumers. The scheme helps consumers to decide where to eat or purchase food from based on their hygiene standards. The Food Safety Agency runs the scheme in conjunction with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It rates the food premises from 5 to 0; the displaying of the sign is voluntary in England but required by law in Wales and Northern Ireland.
