MOVING & HANDLING

Moving & Handling

Did you know?

A fifth of all injuries in the workplace were caused by manual handling issues in 2018/19.

Health and Safety Executive Statistics

Moving any load counts as moving and handling, whether you are pulling, pushing, lifting or carrying.

The spine is an amazing structure of the body, allowing us to bend, move, and twist in any direction within certain limits. It is more likely to be injured during moving and handling tasks than any other part of the body. This damage can cause long-term back pain, nerve entrapment or other serious back complaints. Therefore, it is important that the risk of injury is reduced when performing moving and handling tasks.

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations of 1992 state:

4.(1) Each employer shall

(a) So far as is reasonably practicable, avoid the need for his employees to undertake any manual handling operations at work which involve a risk of their being injured; or

(b) Where it is not reasonably practicable to avoid the need for his employees to undertake any manual handling operations at work which involve a risk of their being injured…

(i) Make suitable and sufficient assessments

(Ii) Take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of injury

(Iii) Take appropriate steps to provide employees:

(aa) The weight of each load
(bb) The heaviest side of the load where the centre of gravity is not positioned centrally.

During our course, we will guide learners through the TILE assessment for moving and handling tasks. Using this very simple method should assist in the task of moving a load should the task not be avoidable.

All our courses are taught using our FIRST principles.

Our philosophy revolves around ensuring that you have a fun experience on your course; research has shown that if you learn in a light-hearted way, regardless of subject, the more information that is retained.

No more will you be sat in a training course watching the clock tick round wishing it was home time.
